Cindy Sherman
Born January 19, 1954, Cindy Sherman is an American photographer and film director, best known for her conceptual portraits. Sherman works in series, typically photographing herself in a range of costumes. To create her photographs, Sherman shoots alone in her studio, assuming multiple roles as author, director, make-up artist, hairstylist, wardrobe mistress, and model.
For me to recreate a picture of hers, I will need to follow the rules of composition, making my model stand against it, whilst giving it a filter of black and white.
Saul Leiter
Saul Leiter (1923-2013) was born in Pittsburgh, the son of an internationally renowned Talmudic scholar. Leiter's interest in art began in his late teens, and though he was encouraged to become a Rabbi like his father, he left theology school and moved to New York to pursue painting at age 23. In New York, he befriended the Abstract Expressionist painter Richard Pousette-Dart, who was experimenting with photography. His friendship with Pousette-Dart and soon after, with W. Eugene Smith, expanded his interest in photography. Leiter's earliest black and white photographs show an extraordinary affinity for the medium. By the 1950s, he began to work in color as well, compiling an extensive and significant body of work during the medium’s infancy. His distinctively subdued color often has a painterly quality that stood out among the work of his contemporaries.
Saul Leiter started shooting color and black-and-white street photography in New York in the 1940s. He had no formal training in photography, but the genius of his early work was quickly acknowledged by Edward Steichen, who included Leiter in two important MoMA shows in the 1950s. MoMA’s 1957 conference “Experimental Photography in Color” featured 20 color photographs by Leiter.

The Difference?
The difference between these two artists is that whilst Cindy Sherman takes pictures with people set up as a model with knowledge of the different compositions, however, Saul Leiter takes pictures of the street and pictures you'll see everyday, normally, without the need to set someone up.
Also Saul Leiter uses softer colors to give a vibe of home and friendly compared to Sherman who uses more darker and sharper gradients of back and grey. This allows Cindys piece to be more prominent and darker whilst Leiters piece is on all aspects of soft.
